Depressed teen speaking to counselor

Depression is a common and treatable condition. Depression has been studied for many years and treatment providers have excellent resources available for helping people feel better. Treatment starts with a clinical interview to determine not just the presence of depression, but from which type of depression a person is suffering. Generally, people see improvements in their symptoms when treated with medication, psychotherapy, or a combination of the two.

Treatment should be individualized. Each person is different, and the type of depression can determine which interventions will be most successful. It’s important to discuss the appropriate treatment approach with your provider.

Treatment approaches that have been proven effective include Behavioral Activation Therapy, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Interpersonal Therapy, and Supportive Therapy. Additionally, many people find incorporating medication for depression effective in reducing their symptoms. Treatment can be primarily individual, but can also include family members.
